Hip Hop Fashion : The Advent
When you listen to the words ‘hip hop' then it's not the rap lyrics that come into your head, the things that do are flashes of a distinctive style of fashion which has reigned the industry in the recent past. Dubbed quietly blandly as ‘Hip Hop fashion', this unique type or rather style of dressing was quite popular in (and owes its origin to) the Afro-American youth of particularly Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Orlando, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Memphis, San Francisco Bay Area and Jersey City. Each of these places made significant contributions in the evolution of this dressing style which is now a global phenomenon. The fashion acts as a mirror, exhibiting the real attitude and essence of the ‘hip hop spirit'. Though this style has evolved significantly, it still remains an important part of world fashion and across all cultures.
It all started in the 80s when iconic hip hop artists started dressing up in branded and brightly colored sheepskin and leather bomber jackets and tracksuits. Shoes ranged from Clarks shoes, British walkers, sneakers and shell toes—all with oversized shoelaces. Haircuts also saw a lot of variety as and when popularized on the silver screen, like the jheri curl and the hi-top fade. Accessories were also made an important part of the whole attire—the hip hop age saw the advent of bucket hats, large shades, Name belts, nameplates and multiple rings. Talking of rings, one can never forget the popularity received by jewelry for men in this era—especially necklaces and rings. Heavy diamond stud earrings were an integral part of hip hop fashion in the 80s. Performers helped elevate the popularity by wearing lots of gold necklaces. Several female rappers also popularized the use of large gold door-knocker earrings. The largeness and heavy nature of the jewelry can be attributed to the African belief of wealth and status.
Then in the 90s and towards its end, there was a fall in the fame of gold jewelry as it was replaced by more expensive metal— platinum. Performers and fans discarded yellow and took on a more silvery or grey look. The newer rappers were responsible for this change in the trend. Rappers and fans started wearing platinum and silver jewelry often embedded with diamonds. Wearing of sterling silver pendant with large initials made with small diamonds was also seen. Several rappers had all their teeth plated permanently with platinum! One also saw the coming of detachable jewel teeth coverings and customized fashioned grills.
