First you want to make sure your coffee pot is cool and not too hot. If you just made a pot of coffee let it sit for a while until it has cooled down. You may even want to wait until the next morning before you make coffee to clean your pot.

Next you want to use salt, ice, lemon and water. Add these items to the pot and gently move them around inside the cylinder. It is important that you let the solution stay in the pot until you get the stain remove form the inside of the pot.
Finally you need to rinse the pot out with cold water. It is a good idea to do this about once a month so that your coffee pot stays clean. When you make coffee it is very common to have your pot stain because of the coffee color. Regular cleaning will keep it like new.

I use a coffee pot to brew tea and recently used it to make 1 pot of coffee and I have been unable to get the smell and taste of coffee out of the pot and the thing the tea/coffee goes into..can anyone recommend anything other than vinegar?
Vinegar is the SAFEST method!!
Mix a full coffee pot with a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts of water. For extremely slow coffee makers, use full strengh vinegar and add a tablespoon of baking soda.

Pour the mixture into the water reservoir of the coffee maker and turn the coffee maker on.
After the mixture has completely run through, toss out the filter and shut the coffee pot off for 3 minutes. Pour the vinegar and water mixture down the drain. Rinse the coffee pot, and fill again, but this time with with plain cold water. Use another clean filter.
Run the plain cold water through the water reservoir to remove the mixture completely. Pour this water down the drain also.
Once the mixture has run completely through, turn the drip coffee maker off and let it cool for 5 minutes before using it to make coffee.
If you are cleaning a coffee maker that hasn't been cleaned regularly, repeat this step again with a fresh vinegar and water mixture many times..
Wash the coffee pot out thoroughly with warm,sudsy plain water to clean it.
