The Oncidium and Phalaenopsis – 2 Very Popular Orchids

Over the years, orchids have quickly become one of the most popular plants ever. Known for their beauty, elegance, and fragrance, the orchid is the supreme tropical flower.  There are thousands of different orchid types grown naturally and even more hybrids.

 

Oncidium Orchids

The Oncidium orchid is one of the more popular indoor plant due to it being able to produce dozens of flowers during their growth season. There are dozens of different species of Oncidium to choose from.

What separates it from other species of plants and other orchids for that matter is how easily it cross pollinates with other orchids. This enables growers to create beautiful hybrids if they so choose.

What also makes the Oncidium a great plant is that not only does it grow well outside the home, but most Oncidium specimens also grow quite well inside the home.

The Oncidium adapt quite well and are tolerant to direct sunlight.  Unlike most orchids which require some shade to protect them from the sun's rays, they can handle the heat and light quite well.

In addition, they tend to bloom better when exposed directly to the sunlight.

Oncidiums also enjoy a lot of moisture. Unlike most orchids that require watering at least once per week or every other week, be prepared to water this plant at least once every other day, especially during the heavy growing season.

 

Phalaenopsis Orchids

The Phalaenopsis, or moth orchids, is considered the easiest orchid to grow and care for. Maybe this is why this orchid is often suggested to someone just starting out and learning how to grow and keep orchids.  It is also one of the most recognized flowers around.  It's the orchid mostly seen at the florist and everywhere else.

Because of their beauty and their ease of being hybridized, growers everywhere had created thousands of hybrids.

The moth orchid, unlike the Oncidium does not fare well when exposed to direct sunlight.  The Phalaenopsis will wither when placed in a location is exposed to constant sunlight and very little shade.

This plant is an excellent candidate to place in a window facing the eastern sun, where it will benefit from the cooler morning sunlight and afternoon shade.  If you must place the orchid where it is getting direct sunlight, make sure it is getting some shade to prevent the orchid from burning.

The Phalaenopsis does not like dry periods, unlike the Oncidium. If this plant does not get enough water, it will die. You want to make sure you water it at least once per week.

A good indication the moth orchid is not getting enough water is to check its roots. If they are turning white, the orchid is not getting enough water.
