Seven Sweets & Treats Shops in Amsterdam

1. Van Avezaath-Beune

Established in 1882, Amsterdam's Van Avezaath-Beune is a sweet shop straight out of Hansel and Gretel. It makes delicious sweets, figures, and decorative figurines out of marzipan according to the season of the holiday. The gevulde speculaas with almonds and cloves, a fall specialty, and the springtime chocolates are simply wonderful.

2. Holtkamp

Petra Holtkamp is the owner of the prettiest pastry shop in town: the décor is totally 1930s and the pastries are simply divine, especially the lemon cake. The piping-hot shrimp, cheese, or curry croquettes, to be eaten on the spot or taken home, are the tastiest in Amsterdam.

3. Pompadour

Held in high esteem by international gourmets who have been known to get emotional when describing the little candied ginger shortbread cookies and the caramelized apple tartlets, this excellent traditional pastry shop—Queen Beatrix is rumoured to be a customer here—also offers delicious chocolates and a wealth of sweet treats that are murder on the waistline. Trendy restaurants and fancy Amsterdam hotels might disappoint, but the Pompadour lives up to its storied reputation.

4. Unlimited Delicious

This chocolate store has firmly become a haven for alternative gourmets. In this gilded orange chocaholic's paradise, you are faced with choosing between such "ordinary" temptations as caramel-filled chocolates, pralines and truffles, before surrendering to the wilder orange caramels or the mind-boggling range of ganaches: rosemary, cardamom, ginger, lemon, thyme, and honey or tomato and balsamic vinegar. In terms of pastry, the croquant fondant au chocolate takes the cake.

5. What's Cooking

Jacqueline Overtoom's amusing apple green and orange culinary bazaar has been open since 1997. Here she sells kitchen accessories and tableware, along with an appetizing selection of spices, oils, condiments, and jams from the world over, all selected and arranged according to…colour. Who would ever have thought that the Salins du Midi coloured plastic salt cellars could be so cool?

6. Uliveto

Luciano Molinari knows Italian food like he knows the back of his hand. His goods are displayed in a contemporary white-tiled shop that is Spartan yet grand. His tantalizing selection of the best in Italian gastronomy ranges from olive oils in steel drums, homemade dry pastas, organic sauces, and pestos, to mineral waters, jars of preserves, and delicious prepared meals.

7. Meeuwig & Zn

Manfred Meeuwig has been selling house vinegar, mustard, and pesto for over ten years, as well as offering the finest olive oils in the world. The major contenders are of course, Crete, Seville, Tuscany, Corsica, and Sicily—a favourite among the Dutch—but he also includes interesting varieties from Lake Garda and the island of Lesbos.

I need a pattern for a children's craft call a salt cellar, I know it is made from folding paper, can you help?

I am having the kids in Sunday school make a craft, from folding paper. I attempted the directions provided, but to no avail/ The directions said the pattern is similar to a "salt cellar" that children might be familiar with, any suggegtions
